Past Student Profiles
Some of our past students tell us what they are up to now…
Atul Roy
Currently
I am working at the Bell Research Laboratory of Lucent Technologies as a UTRAN
Cluster Integration Engineer, and I would like to thank everyone at the
University of Kent for their guidance and support.
For me choosing the right institute and MSc programme was a very important career decision. I was looking for a course which would give me a lot of knowledge in different technologies and also open up more job opportunities. The MSc in Broadband and Mobile Communication Networks covers a wide range of the latest technologies followed by a project which gives every individual the freedom to fulfil their desire of knowledge. I also found the careers advisory service at Kent extremely helpful; they gave me guidance about writing CVs, applying for jobs, facing interviews, top companies, their recruitment processes etc.
My stay at the University of Kent gave me an opportunity to take part in many other activities and meet people from all over the world. Canterbury is a beautiful, quiet city with easy access to London and a lot of south-east England beaches.

I studied for an MSc in Canterbury after finishing my degree
in Spain and Germany. The MSc was a good way to gather all the knowledge from my
previous academic years, learn in more detail about new technologies and put in
practice this knowledge gained.
Life in Canterbury was a great experience! It was the first time I lived on a university campus and it was very nice to live sorrounded by students. Everything was run by students: pubs, discos, restaurants, etc. I also joined the basketball team. The University of Kent supports sports a lot and joining a sports club makes it very easy to meet new people.
The MSc has helped me greatly to find good jobs around the world. After the MSc I continued working for British Telecom in the IP Networks department, then I received a good offer from Lucent Technologies, Germany to work in a bright new UMTS department. I worked there for 3 years. Then I moved to Nortel Networks, Spain, and I'm still working there. I'm currently a UMTS Engineer Leader for different projects around the world: O2 Germany, KTF Korea, etc. I enjoy my work and the travelling (see the picture of me in Korea!).

With
a previous background in electrical engineering, I found the well structured MSc
course at Kent offered me an ideal opportunity, and the knowledge necessary, to
make a transition into the communications area, which I wanted to be in.
Located in the south east of England, the historical city of Canterbury offers good commuting links to London and the rest of Europe, which is ideal for foreign students like me who also want to spend any spare time travelling around Europe.
Following the course, I decided to stay on at Kent and worked as a research associate under Dr Nathan Gomes. I also registered as a part-time PhD student, specialising in optical communications engineering.
After my PhD, I joined Bookham Technology as a Senior Engineer responsible for developing optical transceiver modules. The training gained during the MSc course was a crucial factor in enabling me to secure this position. I am now a Technical Manager in Phyworks, a company developing ICs for the optical communication market. In this job, I use my technical and language skills to provide product support to customers in China, Taiwan, and Korea. The MSc course at Kent was a technical foundation stone for my career, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to work in the communications industry.
Athanasia Tsibouri
I have just started work at the headquarters of the Greek
Telecommunications Organisation S.A as a Telecom Engineer in the Department of
(Transmission) Networks Project Management. Until recently, I was a Project
Engineer in the Defence Systems Management Department of INTRACOM S.A, a leading
company in Telecommunications and Information Systems in Greece. My main
responsibilities included managing and coordinating two significant
subcontracted weapon locating systems projects in terms of configuration, cost,
schedule, production and quality.
I found the MSc course that I did at Kent very useful for my work at INTRACOM. Throughout the course I gained a very good theoretical knowledge in the area of communications as well as a great practical experience from the 6-month RF design project, part of which took place in the laboratories of Harada European Technology Centre which was based at the University. I found the academic staff in the Department very friendly and always willing to provide guidance and assistance.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time living on campus while studying at the University of Kent. The university campus offers students excellent facilities both of the academic and extra-curricular variety with its library, computer rooms, sports center, restaurants, bars, night-club and any number of societies and social clubs to cater for every individual’s taste in movies, sports or hobbies - all of which facilitates greatly in socializing with others and making new friends. The university’s large Erasmus and Commonwealth student population also greatly enriched my social and cultural awareness and experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending the University of Kent to Greek friends who want to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK.
