Mission and plan
The School of Engineering and Digital Arts strives to
- provide an environment which supports world-class research
in the subject areas in which we teach
- offer excellent teaching
- demonstrate an enviable track record of achievement in enterprise-led
activity enhancing opportunities
- nurture strong partnerships with academic and industrial organisations in the UK,
Europe and worldwide
- impact positively on contemporary issues, recognising that the unique blend of technological
and design expertise within the School is at the forefront of the needs of 21st
Century Society
- develop and support the career plans and aspirations of its staff and student body
Our strategy above is closely aligned with the six key messages from the
2009-2012 University of Kent plan.
To further support our mission, the current School plan has identified the following
priorities for development in 2011-12
- The School will continue to enhance the contents of its current portfolio of undergraduate
courses, in addition to the introduction of a new
BA in Digital Arts (addressing a recognised skill-gap whilst complementing
our successful Multimedia Technology and
Design programme)
- The School will launch two new MSc programmes in
Mobile Applications Design and Engineering
with Finance
- The MSc programmes in Engineering will be presented
to the IET for Accreditation; all programme
specifications reflect the
UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) benchmarks
- The School will continue the initiatives which have resulted in consistently excellent
NSS scores: first in 2010 and first three times in the past six years
- The School will move forward in a sustainable manner that preserves our position
as a top twenty unit within the UK discipline specific rankings of universities
with an aspiration to move into the top ten
- The School will increase its participation within national schemes to promote science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to young people such as
The Big Bang, The Engineering Education Scheme
and STEMNET
- All our modules will be supported within the University's
Moodle VLE as from 2011/12
- Following our success in the Green Impact Project, we will
continue our focus on environmental sustainability throughout our teaching, research
and enterprise activities
- The School's research endeavours will focus on publishing
REF returnable outputs, increasing research awards and facilitating PhD/MSc-R
completions
- The School will continue with its biennial Research
Conference Series; the next Research Conference
will take place in January 2012
- The School will focus on increasing the number of students who undertake a placement
year and maximise opportunities for students to obtain industrial experience through
sponsored project work and consultancy
