ENGINEERING AND DIGITAL ARTS

Prospective students

Welcome from the Head of School

Professor Sarah Spurgeon, FREngWelcome to the School of Engineering and Digital Arts - a very special School, recognised both for the quality and impact of our research, as well as offering an exciting range of undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities. We believe that the synergy between our research and teaching is key to the quality of our education.

For some of you, your degree will be vocational and prepare you for a job in industry. But the education we provide goes beyond this. We show individuals how to process, organise and manipulate information and take decisions and it is therefore relevant to a wide range of possible careers. Engineering skills are required to tackle a number of issues important to 21st century society such as the energy question, security issues and healthcare.

Engineering CouncilFor budding engineers, we offer both BEng and MEng accredited programmes, where the MEng meets all the educational requirements for becoming a chartered engineer.

The 21st century society is a multidisciplinary environment where individuals who can integrate aspects of IT, media, design, technology and communication are in short supply. For those interested in digital media and arts, we aim to produce graduates who can contribute immediately to the multimedia communication revolution which is core to so many aspects of industry as well as being central to the everyday lives of individuals.

Our undergraduate degree programmes offer the chance to spend a year in industry and we pride ourselves on being highly ranked in terms of graduating students’ employment prospects.

The School is engaged in high-quality research with significant national and international impact while offering excellent opportunities for graduate studies. We have been consistently attracting substantial research funding from the UK Research Councils, European research programmes, industrial and commercial companies, government agencies and others and our spread of expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments.

As a School we are relatively small and this ensures that staff and students work in a friendly environment, offering an inspiring and challenging student experience . To those of you who are potential students I would urge you to use the opportunities to discover as much as you possibly can about our School and the staff and students who work here. Your University years should be an exciting and vibrant time interacting with peers at the highest levels and it is very important to make informed decisions. Speaking as a parent myself, to those who are parents or guardians, I fully appreciate that what could be the first move of a son or daughter to a new environment may be daunting, and I would like to reassure you that if you choose Kent you can rest assured that we will take good care of them. We offer a formative and challenging educational experience in a safe and very pleasant environment within the beautiful and historic city of Canterbury.
