Human Computer Interaction and Social Computing

Intelligent Interactions Research Group

With the rapid advancement of digital technology such as desktop computers, mobile devices and the Internet, interactive systems are becoming increasingly complex. Often, the challenge of designing successful interactive systems lies in seamless integration of technology into the social context in which technology is used. This involves systematic studies of human behaviour in a virtual environment and computer-mediated social interaction. This multidisciplinary approach to engineering and design involves collaboration with experts from various disciplines, ranging from psychology and sociology to art and design. Our research includes analysing existing systems to better understand the underlying design concepts as well as users’ motivation, perception and interaction with the systems. We also carry out experiments, observational studies and Internet research to conceptualise, design and develop novel interactive systems for various application domains, such as healthcare, learning, behaviour change, entertainment, sport, etc.
